We picked up this unusual
and very beautiful c. late 1800's walnut drop-front desk up at an affluent
estate auction this past week. Normally, we would have passed on this
piece because it is far from perfect (not too far though), but it was so
beautiful and unusual we couldn't pass it up and here is why (in all our
years in the business and up until now, we have not had the privilege of
viewing such a unique drop-front desk as this)... this was definitely a
custom piece (not mass produced)... it's features include a fitted interior
with stunning Birdseye dovetailed drawers... black leather writing surface
(probably not original but lovely)... extremely heavy and solid making this
beauty oh so very functional for day-to-day use... original finish which has
acquired a wonderful dark patina... a wonderful shelf for display on top and
very ornate original carved wooden hardware... ample storage capacity and
overall size that suits even the most space challenged homes... this beauty
displays wonderfully but... has some imperfections that we must note as
follows... the brass ornamentation around the keyhole is not original and a
key is stuck in the lock (actually works great as a pull to lower the desk
top)... there is some damage to one of the lower doors on the outside upper
corner where the doors probably swung open during a move and broke off a bit
of wood on the corner of the door (this does not, however, affect the
functionality of the door)... there is a piece of molding missing on one
side of the base and there are the normal 'owies' that come from 100 plus
years of use. All this being said, this desk displays wonderfully and
if it didn't have the few 'mishap' issues that we've mentioned, it would
sell easily for approximately $1,600.00 in any quality antique store.
Accordingly, we managed to get a great deal on this piece (although we
did have to step on a few toes to do so), so we are passing the opportunity
and savings on to you our valued customers! Nothing more to do but to make
this your own and let it serve you and yours for generations to come...
measures approximately 57" height by 30" width by 17" depth... offered at
only $495.00 CDN. |
